1852 - 1856 During this period, it is very likely the family experienced one, if not two infant deaths. John M.'s 1911 obituary indicates he was survived by 10 of his 12 children. Malissa's 1925 obituary indicates she borne 11 children, 10 of whom survived. Judging from the fecundity of John M. and Malissa after 1857, this approximately four year barren period is otherwise anomalous. Ten children are accounted for in census and other records.
